Overview

Avery is the narrator’s partner in “Presence.” Avery shares the apartment with the narrator before taking a live-in motivator arrangement that allows them to travel in Japan.

Role

Avery is more emotionally direct than the narrator and asks whether the narrator is happy with Avery being away for a long period. The narrator recites support but avoids meaningful engagement.

After leaving, Avery responds warmly to a poem sent from the narrator’s account. The narrator realizes the Presence device found the poem through an old conversation and sent it without direct involvement. Later, after the narrator’s death, the Presence persuades Avery that remaining in Japan is best for Avery’s happiness.
