Overview

Jasper van der Vliet is a Dutch documentary director in Current Affairs. He is in his mid-forties, gray-templed, and possessed of a youthful, almost teen-like zeal for filming. His good nature and technical mastery make him appear both excitable and serious about his work.

Jasper is hired to make a feature-length documentary on the USS Carl Vinson crew, with Calvin Munn assigned by MILPREP to accompany him in Hawaii.

Biography

Jasper arrives in Honolulu before the full production crew and begins shooting early with Calvin. At Pearl Harbor, the two men witness the damaged USS Daniel Inouye return after a RINIC strike and board the ship amid rescue efforts.

Jasper films wounded sailors, the damage, and the trapped crew members. Vincent Becker orders the footage sent to MILPREP, leading to a conflict between Jasper’s documentary context and MILPREP’s urgent media strategy. Jasper remains friendly to Calvin afterward, but the requisitioning of the footage permanently sours their relationship.
