Overview
The Spotted Baron is a muskrat nobleman in Claudia Braun and the Disappearing Sable. He appears at the international platform of Plumwald Station, where his entourage helps block Claudia Braun from reaching Duchess Haselschwanz.
The Baron is richly dressed, wearing a fur cape with a clasp, and has a hairless scar across his neck. He is a controversial acquaintance of the king, and Uncle Mürrisch grumbles about him after reading the paper.
Reputation
The Baron is unpleasant toward Claudia and makes derogatory comments about bears. Other characters describe him as stubborn and politically obstructive. A shrew involved in social welfare work regards him as an obstacle and suggests that his absence from the king’s side would be politically useful.
The first-class lounge contains damaging gossip about the Baron. A blue jay, magpie, chickadee, and waiter discuss the claim that the Baroness has run off to Paloma with a quail. The gossip implies that the Baron depends on his wife’s family wealth and would need to protect his reputation if the story became public.
Role in the investigation
The Baron’s entourage can prevent Claudia from reaching Duchess Haselschwanz. If Claudia learns the gossip about the Baroness and brings it to him, he reacts angrily and leaves to speak to the king while his friends laugh.
His departure opens the way for Claudia to approach the Duchess without using the guards’ password. This makes court gossip one of the practical tools available in the final stage of the investigation.
