Overview
Avenforth Assam is a tea strain in “The Palisade.” Lionel Prescott’s manual identifies it as a required part of the ritual used to reach the palisade.
Role
Prescott’s instructions warn that the tea strain cannot be changed or substituted without serious consequences. Matthew Saaland first obtains Avenforth Assam easily and uses it along with meditation to reach the palisade.
The tea later becomes scarce when the brand goes out of business. Matthew searches auction sites and online listings for remaining supplies, where he notices that another buyer is competing for the same stock. That search helps him identify Edith Seabrook after she leaves him.
At the end of the story, Matthew uses a different tea during a new transit attempt. He does not return to the palisade, instead arriving in a desert realm where time appears to work by another rule.
