Overview

The palisade is the central setting of “The Palisade.” It is a forest realm outside ordinary time, reached through a ritual described by Lionel Prescott.

Description

The palisade contains a forest, a stream, and a mill cottage associated with Prescott. The cottage includes Prescott’s books, a replenishing pantry and icebox, and a cherry-colored return elixir kept on the mantle. A marker resembling the Rosetta Stone stands near Matthew Saaland’s arrival point.

Time in the palisade passes at a different rate from the outside world. A long stay inside the realm can occupy only a brief span outside it, which allows Matthew and Edith Seabrook to spend what feels like a year together while only days pass elsewhere.

The realm gives Matthew and Edith privacy, creative focus, and abundant time, but it also separates them from obligations and magnifies their unresolved fears. After their relationship collapses, Matthew comes to see the palisade as unbearable when faced alone.

Access

Access to the palisade requires ritual circles made with laurifolia leaves, a fixed strain of Avenforth Assam, and a focused meditative state. Later visits appear to require more rings. Returning from the realm requires the elixir, and using a substitute tea does not reliably return the user to the same place.
