Overview
Harry Lee Sylvan is a photographer and multimedia artist in Current Affairs. Calvin Munn sees him as an artsy figure with long hair, a beard, and dreamy eyes, and later refers to his beard as a hippie beard.
Harry’s public persona presents him as a restless artist moving through the American subconscious. Within the novel, he matters mainly through his work with Madeline Payne and through Calvin’s jealousy of that connection.
Biography
Madeline first mentions Harry to Calvin after Harry works on an art spread and offers to photograph her. Calvin warns that Harry will try to sleep with her, framing Harry as a sexual and artistic rival before Calvin has any direct role in the situation.
Harry later photographs Madeline in intimate wheat-field images and becomes connected with her resonance meditation retreats. Madeline implies to Calvin that she slept with Harry after discovering Judson Payne’s texts with a waitress, though she does not make Harry into a long-term replacement for Judson.
Harry co-hosts a resonance meditation retreat with Madeline outside Nashville. By the time Calvin later asks whether Madeline is still seeing him, she says she is not.
