Overview
Madeline Payne, formerly Madeline Alder, is Calvin Munn’s long-running romantic counterpart in Current Affairs. She is slim, tawny-haired, and pale-skinned, with sharp facial bones and an almost boyish look from some angles. Later descriptions emphasize her faint freckles, warm skin, and expressive face.
Madeline is from Iowa and later works in Nashville music media. She becomes Judson Payne’s wife and the mother of William, but her connection with Calvin persists across long periods of silence, correspondence, and near-confession.
Biography
Madeline meets Calvin on a hill outside Pointwestern High School and moves to Nashville soon after prom. She later reconnects with him through Instagram while he is at Velram, sends him the song “Choosing,” and falls out of contact for several years.
Madeline visits Calvin in New York after he is dating Rebecca Sedki. Their day together stops short of a sexual betrayal, but it makes Calvin’s feeling for her impossible to dismiss. She later becomes engaged to Judson Payne, a musician Calvin recognizes from her playlist, and marries him at Dellwood Manor in Nashville.
Madeline and Calvin continue intermittent contact after both are married. She sends him photo prints taken by Harry Lee Sylvan, discusses music, work, and art, and spends another charged day with him in New York, but she refuses to become the reason he leaves Rebecca. In Honolulu, Madeline reveals that she is pregnant by Judson and cancels a possible New York move.
After William is born, Madeline separates from Judson, accepts her New York transfer, and comes to Calvin’s hospital room after the Hudson Yards bombing. She and Calvin acknowledge their wasted years and begin a relationship while he is recovering.
