Overview

Imogene Schmidt is Rebecca Sedki’s lover and a major figure in the No-Fly social circle in Current Affairs. She is blonde, warm-toned, and full-figured, with a Germanic face. later descriptions show her as tall, pale, blonde, freckled, and often dressed in black skirts, blazers, or party clothes.

Imogene grows up in Spokane and meets Rebecca at NYU. She works at the opera between shows and remains a caustic, wry, and often hostile presence around Calvin Munn, whose marriage to Rebecca gives him the public place Imogene wants for herself.

Biography

Imogene first blocks Calvin at the door to No-Fly and quickly reveals her history with Rebecca. She tells Calvin that her father, Michael Schmidt, raped her babysitter in front of her when she was six and went to prison, while residuals from his work still support her settlement.

Rebecca’s sexual and romantic connection with Imogene predates and continues through Rebecca’s relationship with Calvin. The connection first ruptures Calvin and Rebecca’s dating relationship, then returns as an unresolved pressure after the marriage. Imogene is present or implied through Coachella, the American Dream Ferris wheel encounter, No-Fly, and Rebecca’s later travels.

The relationship becomes serious enough to trigger Arthur Sedki’s anger and Rebecca’s no-contact period with the family. In Honolulu, Imogene openly names Calvin’s marriage, home, and public role as the structures preventing her from having a recognized life with Rebecca. She is last known to be in Portugal with Rebecca.
