Overview
The Khomyak Empire is an eastern empire in Claudia Braun and the Disappearing Sable. Aleksei Oblaka is a Khomyak sable prince, and his secret presence in Dormouse is tied to diplomacy between the two powers.
The empire is associated with a Khomyak language that becomes important to Claudia Braun’s investigation. The word “oblaka” means “clouds,” a clue that helps Claudia connect a language hint to Aleksei’s surname.
Political context
Dormouse and the Khomyak Empire have tense relations. Duchess Haselschwanz explains that Aleksei has been brought into Dormouse because unusual times require unusual measures, and because the two countries have trouble getting along.
Other station conversations present the empire as guarded and difficult for outsiders to study. The emperor is wary of foreign spies, few translators are available, and researchers often remain within imperial provinces.
Science and travel
Valery, a Khomyak researcher, has received special permission to travel west. Their comments suggest that Khomyak scholarship is advanced in lepidopterology but does not circulate easily outside the empire.
The game also connects Khomyak politics to Siika. Ketto Innostuni flew reconnaissance for the Khomyak Empire during the Rutabega War, while Siika itself is described as a small nation seeking independence rather than simply part of Khomyak territory.
Role in the mystery
Khomyak identity and language help Claudia identify Aleksei. Francine can go to the Barenstadt library for a Khomyak-to-Dormouse dictionary and return with the word that completes the surname clue. Once Claudia brings “Oblaka” to Inspector Felix Frohe, official records can supply Aleksei’s full name.
