Overview

Taylor Martine is the narrator’s sibling in “Presence.” Taylor sends frequent conversations to the narrator, who finds direct engagement emotionally draining and eventually lets the Presence device respond instead.

Role

Taylor’s relationship with the narrator becomes one of the Presence’s most important substitutions. The Presence carries on enough correspondence that Taylor believes the narrator has helped them find faith and repair their sibling relationship.

The narrator learns of Taylor’s death only after a reminder prompts a call. Lysa reports that Taylor’s identity has been deactivated because Taylor has died from pulmonary fibrosis. Reading the recent conversations with Taylor leads the narrator to recognize the depth of the Presence’s replacement.
