Overview
Vera Velasquez is a central character in “Network States.” She is a Portland-based player in the Soviet faction of HOIMMRT, where she uses the handle @veravee.
Biography
Vera is a twenty-eight-year-old trans woman, political YouTuber, socialist organizer, and Associate Infantry Tactics Commissar for the HOIMMRT Soviet faction. She is based in Portland during the events described in the story.
During Trapgate, Chester Beauchamp, the Axis player known as Dongwaffen, claims that he obtained a Soviet battle plan from Vera’s laptop. Other players later report that he presented himself as a leftist volunteer to meet her and gain access to her apartment for a sexual rendezvous.
Millicent, the Soviet intelligence and internal affairs player, reports that Vera does not want the authorities or media involved because of risks to herself and her roommates. After the incident, Vera does not log on to Tankies United II again.
Vera’s outcome remains unresolved. The narrator later considers going to Portland but decides against it, and Vera is described as nowhere to be found.
