Overview
Adrian Ma is a major character in Komodo. He is an assistant district attorney on Alvarado who becomes one of the founders of Komodo and later becomes one of Basra Kusniqa Camden’s most important critics.
Adrian is introduced as a young, athletic attorney with a crisp manner, a sharp jaw, and an impeccably tailored navy suit. He is careful about presentation, from his hair and tie bar to his work clothes, but his later experiences leave him less polished and more visibly worn.
Biography
Adrian first meets Basra outside the Alvarado district attorney’s office after Bald Stula’s death. He explains the charges she might have faced, then later analyzes her idea for task-specific citizen deputization. After an implied sexual encounter with Basra, he quits the district attorney’s office, contributes money from inherited TritiShip shares, and helps acquire the derelict cruiser that becomes Komodo One.
As Komodo’s early financial and legal partner, Adrian helps with the Scott Fossorius operation, pilots Komodo One during the Soltero tritium-shuttle capture, seeks investment on Soltero, and pushes Basra to hire administrative help. He is also one of the first people to recognize the danger in Basra’s refusal to stop. After a unitary audit threatens Komodo’s finances, he argues for selling the company and leaving cleanly; Basra instead buys him out.
Adrian remains tied to Komodo even after leaving. He secretly funds Sysdef, a drone-security competitor intended to beat Komodo through a cheaper model. During the system collapse, he uses his remaining wealth to help civilians flee Dannen City, settles among refugees at New Dannen, and is later detained by the Sovereignty.
Adrian is last seen brought before Basra on Mount Aket. He challenges her claims about human rights, Prerov, Shanvi, and Komodo’s ideology, then fires Basra’s revolver after a guardswoman tackles him. The shot misses Basra and breaks the lower grotto seal. Basra orders him processed for corvee rather than executed.
