Overview

The Elbakyan pattern is a lethal visual file in “Locked In.” It appears on a captured satellite phone as a video file named ELBAKYAN_PATTERN.mkv.

Description

Jim Duag recognizes the file as a light pattern that kills viewers and prevents Garth Jensen from opening it during their patrol. Jensen calls it digital cyanide after Duag explains the danger.

The story does not explain the file’s origin or technical mechanism. Its danger is shown through its effect on remote viewing: when Duag plays it into the camera of an approaching FPV drone, the drone loses control and crashes without detonating. Duag infers that the pattern has reached the remote pilot through the drone feed.

Role in the Story

The Elbakyan pattern is found on the phone of Lewis, a wounded Free Oregon fighter. After Jensen dies and Duag falls from the trail, Duag uses the phone screen to show the pattern to the FPV drone hunting him.

Later, when fire traps Duag and the phone has no satellite link, he opens the file again and plays it directly into his own eyes.
