Johnny Hansum answers Lin Jiao’s request in the Woodpile group chat for someone familiar with Macau’s sex-work venues. He meets Ben Etxina at the Rio Hotel and says they previously met at Aigai House, although Ben does not remember him. Ben sees a thin but reasonably built white man in his late twenties, with steel-blue eyes and a carefully styled haircut.

Johnny speaks Mandarin and knows the entry and locker procedures at the Emperor Hotel sauna. He guides Ben there to ask about Lisa, a former worker associated with the missing robot. During their visit he repeatedly calls Ben “Echidna,” orders a four-hand massage and says he has taken ecstasy. Ben notices his enlarged pupils and sees one of the workers manually stimulating him beneath a towel.

Johnny describes himself as autistic and links his sexual fixation on Asian women to childhood bullying after his mother moved them to Kauai. His complaints about his mother and the community form his own account of that history.

Bill and injury

Johnny obtains a forty-eight-hour unlimited-sex pass and tells the cashier that Ben will pay. Ben denies authorizing the expense, pays only his own charges and retrieves his card. Johnny then runs from the emergency stairs pursued by employees seeking payment. He is struck by a truck as he enters the road and is taken away alive by paramedics.

Ben visits him in hospital under the false pretext of being his brother-in-law. Johnny has apparently undergone surgery, with dressings on his leg and side and an intravenous line. He blames Ben for the collision and directs anti-Latino abuse at him after hearing that he is Idaho Basque. Ben leaves him in the hospital.
