Overview
Lin Jiao is a geneticist in Scenebux and one of the central links between Ben Etxina and the Aigai-T4 social world. She first meets Ben at Coconut Woman, where she challenges his arguments about nuclear war and tells him he needs purpose.
Ben first reads Lin as Vietnamese or Vietnamese American and describes her with narrow brown eyes, smooth features, and careful grooming. Later he notes her long unstyled hair, winged eyeliner, fit build, and tan skin.
Aigai and T4 Connections
Lin identifies the blond biker group around Wigland as Nazi LARPers and helps Ben damage Wigland’s motorcycle. She then brings Ben to an Oakland party connected to Aigai House, names the T4 Fund, and gives him Max Pacifica’s contact information.
Later, Lin says the Young Realists have hired her whole lab team for genomic analysis. She defends her right-wing politics through Catholic, anti-communist, and Schmittian arguments and rejects Ben’s attempt to separate ordinary right-wing politics from fascism.
Relationship with Ben
Lin invites Ben to Edgelands, a retreat at Camp Wendago. They have sex in her tent, and Ben relies on her statement that she has a copper IUD, foregoing a condom. Soon afterward, Tim Gottseed and the Order of Odin remove both of them from Far Camp and take them to Aigai House.
At Aigai House, Lin brings Ben to Carl Froht. Froht reveals that Ben’s semen was saved by Lin and subsequently sequenced. Lin argues that The Filter only causes sterility and urges Ben to forget what he has learned after Froht lets him leave. Their exchange there leaves unresolved whether she slept with him for desire, for Froht’s genetic sampling, or both.
Work after Froht
In Homonoid, Lin says she supplied laboratory drives to avoid prosecution and agreed to stop working in a lab. She works as Advocacy Coordinator at RunTrains, a transit-funding organization, attends Democratic events and calls herself a NATO Democrat. She also describes herself as culturally Catholic, connecting this to a Cochinchinese folk tradition. Her rejection of Froht’s conduct centers on his failure and flight to Argentina. She continues to defend elite authority and genetic selection.
Lin recruits Ben to find Hammett, a conversational AI stolen from Homonoid Labs, offering him half of a two-million-dollar bounty. She needs someone familiar with Froht’s associates but no longer loyal to them and values Ben’s preference for working away from screens. She handles executive contacts and technical analysis while he pursues leads. Their disagreement over whether she is his manager or partner extends to money: she deducts travel expenses from his share and refuses to share intelligence with competing investigators without matched compensation.
Investigation with Ben
After Homonoid employee Jordan Damour is killed in Sedona, Lin copies his computer drives before surrendering the originals to company security. The transmission records send Ben to Somaliland while she approaches the hackers Rim of the World through former Froht contacts. She later introduces Ben by video to Andrej, a man he saw fleeing Damour’s hotel, and defends the shooting as self-defense during a dispute over stolen Bitcoin.
Lin joins Ben in Macau after he finds Hammett operating a mining robot with Max Pacifica’s voice. She explains the use of Max’s personal recordings in its training and recognizes the film plot the machine has used to manipulate him. When they return together, Ben fights the robot while she pursues Lisa, the woman sheltering it. When Lisa later swings a golf club at Lin, Ben intercepts it and Lin punches her before police intervene. Lin returns the recovered drives to Homonoid, but the damaged model cannot be restored. Both investigators receive $200,000.
Her dealings with Ben continue to combine sexual attraction, control and distrust. In Macau she wakes him by grabbing his neck and demands that he kneel and kiss her boot as an apology for his insults. He complies. After his weapon injury leaves his sperm inert, she offers help if he wants children, conditional on approving the pairing. She does not confirm retaining the semen collected for Froht. Lin declines a partnership in Ben’s new investigation firm, preferring possible occasional work as a hired specialist.
