Overview

Raymond Hayworth is a Project Remus physicist in “The Third Machine.” The story includes two universe-specific versions of him: the alpha Raymond who discovers the first dimensional signal, and the beta Raymond whose survival drives Helen Hayworth’s later actions.

Role

In the alpha facility, Raymond operates the third machine and identifies a signal from another world. Against warnings from John Fenton and Helen Fenton, he sends a return transmission. The signals collide, and alpha Raymond is vaporized in the focusing chamber.

In the beta facility, Raymond survives the original contact event but becomes gravely ill after years of continued third-machine testing. His wife, Helen Hayworth, works with the alpha facility to adapt the second machine so Raymond’s consciousness can be stored and eventually restored.

Beta Raymond’s body dies before a safe crossing becomes possible. His final known situation is as a stored mind on datatape that Helen Hayworth uses to overwrite John Fenton, allowing Raymond to awaken in John’s body.
