Overview

The Sedki family is Rebecca Sedki’s Sahidic family group in Current Affairs. It includes Arthur Sedki, Cleo Sedki, Rebecca, Maryam Sedki, Rami Sedki, and a wider network of relatives in New York and abroad.

The family gives Calvin Munn money, work, status, religious context, and social pressure. Its approval turns Calvin from a hired designer into a prospective son-in-law and then into part of the family’s public image.

Family Role

Sedki family life appears through potlucks, cross-town visits, holiday gatherings, and the elaborate planning of Calvin and Rebecca’s Sahidic wedding. Cleo pressures Calvin about his mother and later about children, while Maryam’s behavior and substance issues recur as family background.

The family’s money flows through trusts and a monthly allowance that lets Calvin push back against Donovan Johnson at NLI. The same dependency makes divorce and Rebecca’s relationship with Imogene Schmidt more difficult. When Rebecca’s relationship with Imogene becomes known, Arthur and Cleo’s reaction helps drive Rebecca into no-contact with the family.
