Overview
Sapphire Van Ness is an independent gossip journalist in A Cancellation. She works under the public name Scoop, appears with a chunky SCOOP microphone, and runs the channel ScoopTV.
Sapphire is described with a red wig, black hoodie, talon-like nails, red hair in her on-camera docuseries persona, and black lipstick. She uses a hired cameraman at public events and later works from an Echo Park home office while investigating Amanda Bannington.
Investigation of Amanda
Sapphire first approaches Amanda at an event called CreatorCon to ask about public misinformation around Andy Field’s disappearance. Amanda calls her a culture vulture and refuses access. Sapphire later studies Amanda’s public internet footprint and identifies Michael Senesky’s comment about receiving a private Amanda photo as a key lead.
After Michael’s in-person encounter with Amanda in Minneapolis, Sapphire calls him using her real name and speaks with a calm, social-worker-like voice. Her contact with Michael becomes the basis for the most legally dangerous part of Surviving Amanda Bannington.
Target of Henry Owens
Sapphire releases the first part of Surviving Amanda Bannington with Susan Cairn, then Andy’s interview, and then teases Michael’s episode. She calls Amanda to offer an on-record response before airing allegations that may be criminal.
After Amanda meets Henry Owens, Henry offers to attack Amanda’s enemies. Amanda names Sapphire as the person who caused everything, making her Henry’s intended target. The later HeyHiHaejin series says Henry was arrested before he could strike against Sapphire.
