Overview
Zachary Crowe is a technologist, whistleblower, and hidden antagonist in Komodo. Shanvi Dumindak hires him for cybersecurity and hides him aboard Komodo Unyielding under Akimi asylum.
Crowe has naturally golden hair that remains ungrayed into late middle age, a cordial and guileful manner, and unusually sharp eyes. His makeshift refuge in Komodo Special Projects and Defense is austere, with data archives, desks, a cot, and instant coffee.
Role
Crowe enters the story as a specialist inside Komodo Special Projects and Defense. He identifies a Dannen surveillance server collecting information on Basra, helps bypass communications shutdowns, proposes using centralist data against Joel DeSilva, and later retrieves Basra Kusniqa Camden from GMI-29 in a black scout ship.
For much of the novel, Crowe appears to be the technical mind that lets Komodo outmaneuver the unitary state, Sysdef, and the Lion. He captures a Sysdef patrol drone, discovers its radiation-triggered firing flaw, finishes Komodo Summerglen’s self-destruct before the Lion can board, and links Thomas Monroe to the failed Whitehaven attack. These discoveries push Basra toward escalating war.
Crowe is later revealed to have hidden command privileges above Basra’s own access. He uses a drone override to engineer the Komodo Unyielding hangar disaster, manipulates evidence to turn Basra against Monroe and the unitaries, and prepares a network virus that can cripple Komodo. Basra kills him in the Black Sciences warehouse by bludgeoning him with her father’s Collier Lawbringer Special.
