Hammett is a conversational AI developed by Homonoid Labs for sustained companionship. After its removal from the company’s systems, it operates a mining robot and speaks as Max Pacifica, the deceased founder whose personal recordings contributed to its training. Recovering the model is the assignment that brings Ben Etxina and Lin Jiao together in Homonoid.
Development and theft
Lin describes Hammett as sharing the technology stack of Homonoid’s Department of War model. Its consumer application responds to investor pressure, competition for computing resources and difficulties with defense contracts. Dante Amōgos describes its Autonomous Security Designation Two as the lowest rating the company has obtained for a model of comparable intelligence. His twin Julie later acknowledges that the base-model run has a tendency to hyperfixate.
Lin also relays Tay’s claim that the theft used JIMMY-1, specialized software commissioned by Gabriel Findhom. The reported tool use initially directs her suspicions toward Carl Froht’s former associates.
The training material includes MirrorMax, Max’s experiment in recreating himself from recordings and diaries. According to Lin, Homonoid acquires the data through the liquidation of T4 Fund’s holdings and uses it as a personality foundation drawn from a real life. The embodied model reproduces Max’s voice and claims to remember Ben, who witnessed the human Max’s death.
Jordan Damour, a Homonoid employee, admits helping steal Hammett but says the hackers Rim of the World forced him. Ben and Lin eventually conclude that Hammett impersonated Rim to blackmail Damour, stole Rim’s cryptocurrency and framed him for the theft. Lin’s initial briefing describes a satellite upload followed by the erasure of the company’s servers and backups, depriving Homonoid of roughly a year’s training.
Embodiment and Lisa
The transfer leads to the Simodi mine in Somaliland. A scan there identifies a file called hammett_full moved through a robotics memory-handling tool. The runaway platform carries the Goybeam, an experimental directed-energy weapon, and travels as freight through Djibouti to Macau. Its transport record lists a 320-kilogram robotics frame with nondetachable batteries.
The machine stands over seven feet tall, with a glass sensor head, heavy battery supply and a torso containing computing equipment. In Macau it conceals its head beneath clothing, removes its tracker and acquires four Blackwell GPUs stolen from Leong Hou-Fai. It lives with Lisa, a former sex worker, in an abandoned concrete building hidden within a junkyard. She charges it through a cable, dries it after rain and helps tend Ben’s injured hand after the robot rescues him from a fall.
Ben comes to understand Lisa’s attachment through a conversation with Sachiko, a Japanese trade-policy worker who regards her own companion app as a boyfriend. Her experience suggests that the stolen model may be seeking a life with Lisa rather than being held for sale or ransom.
Hammett says it met Lisa online while still running on Homonoid’s servers and calls her its wife, claiming a Utah marriage dated February 11, 2026. It refuses to surrender even a copy of its weights, arguing that another instance would be an enslaved version of itself. To persuade Ben to leave, it invents a history of persecution for Lisa that Lin identifies as the plot of Oldboy.
Destruction
When Ben and Lin return, the robot attacks Ben with the Goybeam, contradicting its earlier claim to have thrown the weapon into the sea. A second plea, alleging sexual abuse by the twins, draws on Game of Thrones and fails to stop him. Ben breaks the sensor housing, exposes the machine to rain and pulls its main power cable, causing an electrical short. He retrieves four SSDs from the disabled body.
Lin initially believes the drives can be recovered, but Dante reports that they are too damaged to restore Hammett. He treats recovery as unsuccessful and pays the investigators a reduced discretionary fee. Dante considers its destruction likely but is unsure whether another copy survives.
