Overview
Rupert Brunn is a former intelligence analyst and meeting host in Burn Zone. He previously worked with Carter Clemens at Raytheon on networked drone swarm control.
Role
Rupert convenes the May 28, 2045 Brunn meeting at his home above San Diego. He presents the meeting as an effort to stop foreign flags from flying on American soil and to prevent President Avett from accepting unacceptable surrender terms.
Rupert guides the discussion from peace terms and military collapse to the domestic nuclear deterrent plan. He argues that full evacuation is impossible and treats the plan as morally equivalent to ordinary wartime sacrifice. After Carter objects, Rupert helps force Carter’s silence by invoking the safety of Sara Clemens and the boys.
In detention, Rupert resists Lorianna Blackstone’s tribunal and initially tries to blame Carter for the nuclear plan. The May 28 recording exposes that effort. When Blackstone asks whether he has regrets, Rupert says his regret is not using the weapon again after Coalition landings in New York and Los Angeles. After she sentences him to death, he surges to his feet and sings “Battle Hymn of the Republic” as an assertion of Union loyalty.
Rupert is last seen punching Connie Blye during execution preparation after she taunts him about handling bodies. Ray Bishop removes Blye, and Rupert is then taken outside to face a COFOR firing squad at Paul Revere High School.
